Mexico:

You won’t believe what Mexicans are up to every new year’s eve! They follow a spooky tradition of talking to spirits on this eve. According to the Mexicans, it is the best time to communicate with the souls of their deceased family members. However, the tradition is followed legally by the locals. Once they connect with their loved ones with the help of professionals, they convey whatever message they wish to and even ask for any guidance they might be looking forward to.

Russians follow an interesting tradition of planting a tree underwater so as to mark the beginning of the new year. The custom involves professional divers cutting a hole in the ice covering lake Baikal and diving to plant a tree so as to drive in good fortune.

Scotland:

For Scotland, the new year’s eve is a time full of ‘dangerous’ celebration as they celebrate their Hogmanay Festival at this time. During the festival, the men parade through the streets. The parade is quite a scary one. The men participating in the parade hold blazing balls of fire and continuously swing them over their heads. The custom is believed to ward off the negativity and lead to purification.

The Brazilians start their new year by worshipping Goddess Lemanja. She is the goddess of water, and she is believed to love gifts, especially flowers. So, the Brazilians strive hard to make her happy by offering bunches of flowers to her. They throw flowers into the ocean. The Goddess is said to have accepted the present if the flowers sail away with the waves. However, if they come back, it is believed that she didn’t accept them!

For the residents of China, the color red symbolizes good luck and fortune. That is the reason they use this color for every important occasion. Same goes for the new year celebrations. They follow a custom where every front door of a house is painted for the new year! They also hide all the knives for the day. This is done so that nobody cuts oneself as it would actually cut the entire family’s good luck for the upcoming year.

Ever heard of people throwing crockery at their friends’ house so as to wish them, luck for the new year? Probably not! But that’s what the Danes do in order to ring in the new year. They further stand on chairs and then jump off them together at midnight. Both these customs are said to ward off all the evil spirits and bring good fortune.
